How to paint a wooden boat

Whether due to the need to carry out a maintenance full to the ship, or for the pleasure of change the color, to make the repainting of a wooden boat we will need to follow a series of steps that will help us achieve a result cash and durable.

Let's see how to paint all the parts of a wooden boat.

We will start with deck woods, followed by living work and finally the dead work.

How to Paint Deck Woods

As always, before starting any repair and maintenance work, we must make sure that we wear the appropriate protective clothing: protection divermask, glasses, gloves and if necessary shoe covers.

We must first clean with fresh water all the deck wood to be repaired.

We protect the areas adjacent to the work area well to avoid accidents delimiting with plastic and technical tapes. We complement the masking with a cover protector, like the MAXPRO.

We make a first sanding where we will eliminate the most superficial layers of varnish.

The varnish gives the wood a layer of protection that acts as elements and highlights the natural beauty of the wood, it is recommended that they take a UV filter.

The sanding We can do it with sandpaper or with a sander (depends on the width of the surface) and abrasive discs paper or film  with medium grains P150-P260.

Once sanded we must completely remove the dust with a brush or a clean cloth.

We can apply the same solvent that we will use with the rag varnish to finish cleaning the surface.

If necessary, we will replace the masked for a new one.

It is recommended to apply several layers of varnish to the wood to achieve a deep and lasting shine. In the first layers we will dilute a 30% with varnish solvent and apply it with a brush.

In the following layers of varnish the amount of solvent will be reduced.

For optimum results, it is recommended to sand lightly between coats with abrasive sponges fine-grained, superfine or microfine.

How to paint the living work

After recovering the timbers from the deck, we proceeded to treat the live work of the boat.

We will proceed in the same way, Cleaning with fresh water and degreasing to proceed to the complete sanding that will leave us a smooth and uniform surface.

We will make sure to use the elements of personal protection  (diver, glasses, mask and gloves).

Surely we will find some areas of damage, these defects will be solved by patching putty epoxy. Putty should be mixed properly until a consistent mix is obtained and an adequate amount is used. If too much is applied, the surface will need to be sanded further.

Apply the putty with a spatula of the necessary size for the area to be treated.

Once the putty dries, you have to sand the surface to get a correct profile. Then we will seal it with a suitable primer (mixing the components well). The manufacturer will report the number of coats required to be applied.

Once we have the dry or semi-dry surface, the antifouling must be applied. We will apply it quickly first horizontally and then from top to bottom. The manufacturer will also inform you of the number of layers required.

Before applying the paint and varnish we must sand the surface with fine grain abrasive discs P-800-P1000 and we will clean the remains with a clean cloth.

How to paint the dead work

After recovering the live work we headed to the dead work of the boat.

We will reapply technical tapes to divide the two areas of the boat (waterline). Make sure to cover the entire area where we have applied antifouling to ensure correct protection. It is recommended to use the plastic with UV technical tape or with rice paper tape that allows a correct masking without leaving a residue when removing the product.

Delimit areas of the helmet with tape

We proceed to apply the paint previously mixed with the solvent to create the finishing layer of the boat. For a better finish it is recommended to alternate the use of brushes and rollers.

The boat maintenance Wood will be carried out periodically depending on its use and if it winterizes in a dry dock or on the quay.
