The process of painting a car

SEAT opens its doors to teach us, through Motor Journalism, what the painting process of a new vehicle is.

Choosing the color of a car

The color of a car is one of the factors that is most taken into account when choosing a car, that's why in the factory it is one of the most laborious and long processes.

Nothing more and nothing less than almost 3 years is what the laboratory needs to design a color range. This time is used to learn about market trends, propose a color palette and carry out the necessary tests on sheet metal parts. Up to 1,000 liters are invested until the final color is decided.

Carol Gómez, from the color department, explains that they have created up to 100 variations of a hue to choose the shade that best suits them.

How paint is applied

Once the color has been chosen, the bodies go through the production chain to the painting area that has 84 robots that apply the paint in an ambient temperature of 21-25 degrees. Each of the robots uses 5,000 liters of paint daily to paint the 2,400 cars. 7 coats of paint are applied to each vehicle.

Factory painted process

The paint chain ventilation system is similar to that of an operating room to ensure that no speck of dust is deposited on the freshly painted bodywork.

The drying process is carried out at 140 degrees.

Once dried, the scanning work is performed to check for any paint failure. For this, a state-of-the-art scanner is used, which only takes 43 seconds to verify that the 3-year work has been satisfactory.

Hospital line in car manufacturing

For vehicles that do not pass the scan due to a failure in the painting process or that due to an accident by an operator, the sheet has suffered a scratch, there is the Hospital Line.

The Hospital Line is a finishing area where touch-ups are carried out on bodies that have suffered minor damage.

factory finished process

It is in this Hospital Line where manufacturers use Daevi's Protective Film Quick Mask to perform touch-ups and repainting parts. A very precise task to leave the vehicle as if it had passed the control scan.

If experts and car manufacturers trust Daevi, don't you?
