UNIRAID 2018, the solidarity rally that offers an adventure to students
In this edition, we have again collaborated with the team of the Salesians Center formed by Aleix i Vicenç. Two young adventurers who have not wanted to miss this opportunity to limit the car they are participating in: A 22-year-old, 110,000km citroen AX, from which we show you the process of its restoration in this post and where it shows the care they have put into it to set it up.
Following the advice that we offered them on their first visit to Daevi, they have been conducting extreme tests on sandy and snowy terrain, without using chains, to ensure that the car will respond to them in the rally, since according to the itinerary of the UNIRAID 2018During the 7 stages you will find from kilometer dunes to rocks or snow. This last week, in the village of Midelt, one of the stages, up to 3 meters of snow have fallen.
The challenge, in addition to driving vehicles over 20 years old and overcoming the obstacles of nature, is to overcome the stages without using GPS or electrical devices. They will only have a roadbook, map and compass.
For 3-4 nights they will sleep outdoors, they will check the contrast of temperatures that exists in the desert from night to day and they will take food as the stages will last all day.
Although Vicenç is a student of mechanics and vehicle maintenance, and this gives him a great advantage in the event that the car has a specific breakdown, the rest of the participants are students from other disciplines such as Marketing or Engineering, who will probably have helped them in the search for sponsorships, but they will have more problems than the Salesians team when it comes to extreme driving or urgent car repair.
Although if there is a problem, both in the car and in the participants, the UNIRAID organization has mechanical and health technicians who travel to their location to solve it.
Aleix and Vicenç are very happy, since they have obtained enough sponsors to cover all the expenses of the rally: textile companies, insurers, schools, the Red Cross, workshops, NGOs, hardware stores ...
At Daevi, in collaboration with InforlimWe have offered them all the school supplies they can carry on board their Citroen AX so that they can distribute it to the villages they pass through during the 7 stages. This great act of solidarity will facilitate the learning of children who have few resources to study.
The departure of the rally will be this Saturday, February 24 in Tangier, where they will arrive via a ferry with departure in Barcelona and duration of 27 hours.
The participation of this edition has been very good, about 200 vehicles have wanted to be part of this solidarity rally with students from all over Spain, although there is a greater Catalan participation.
